Story of Maceió

Hello everyone ! ;D Now I'm going to talk a little about the main city of Alagoas ;)

Nowadays Maceió is the main economic center of Alagoas. But to get to this point the city of Maceió had to pass through lots of problems.

To begin, Maceió firstly started from a mill called 'Masayo-k' which means 'what covers the wetland', in the XVII century. Jaraguá Bay offered a huge facility to the fishers because the location was very close to the main centers of economy (Alagoas do Sul in the southern part and Porto Calvo in the northern part). The small group of fishers became bigger and bigger by the time. In 1815 Maceió was elevated to Village for its great advancement and in 1817 the state of Alagoas was dismembered from Pernambuco. For that reason Alagoas needed to choose a place in order to create its first Treasure house. The city of Alagoas do Sul (today Marechal Deodoro) was choosen to house the Treasure House. Despite of that, Maceió was still growing and became a very important Village because Jaraguá Bay provided great facility to the Portugueses and to the incomming people from far away towns.

The people from Alagoas do Sul was very worried about that because they didn't want to lose the Treasure House, which happened in 1839 after Alagoas do Sul get bankrupt. On the 9th of December 1839 a document was signed containing the transfer of the Treasure House to Maceió, though only 7 days later the real event happened.

Since then, Maceió is the most important economic center of Alagoas.
